Sumter County Schools turn out the lights

AMERICUS, GA- The Sumter County School system hopes to be honored for a project that has saved nearly $1 million in electricity costs since 2008.

The Georgia Department of Education will nominate up to four schools for federal Green Ribbon designation.

It honors schools for their low energy use, healthy initiatives and environmental education.

Sumter County schools save money by shutting down computers and turning off lights.

AMERICUS, GA- Relay for Life is an annual fundraiser that supports cancer research and honors cancer victims and survivors.

Organizations find creative ways to raise money for the cause.  To honor survivors like Deatrice Harris.

At the age of 22, most women are worried about starting their lives.  But for her, what she discovered when she was 22 almost ended her life.

"I had Stage 3 breast cancer of the right breast," she said.

What followed was a series of painful treatments.

"(I) start doing chemo, radiation and had some transplants."

Terrell Commissioners pass same dog ordinance as Dawson

Terrell County, GA- If you live in Terrell County, owning a pit bull might cost you a lot more.

County Commissioners approved a dangerous dog ordinance Wednesday morning that mirrors one approved by the City of Dawson.

The City Council voted to make it illegal for pit bulls to be chained in the backyard.

Dog owners must now have a built -in fence. Any dogs being walked will have to be muzzled at all times.

The new ordinance requires all dog owners to have dog bite insurance at $100,000.

Former students of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will be honored at the annual ABAC Alumni Association awards ceremony as a part of the Celebrate ABAC weekend on March 3 at 11 a.m. at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village on the ABAC campus.

Advance tickets ordered by Feb. 17 are $25 per person.  After that date, advance tickets will be $35.  There will be no tickets sold at the door.
