GSW student's art work purchased by California museum | Events

AMERICUS, GA – A South Georgia college student’s art work was purchased by a California museum.

Kurt Peterson’s internet-based art show entitled "Learning to Love You More" was purchased by the San Francisco Museum of Art.

"I think it's awesome that this project is now in the hands of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and I am pleased to be included in it," said Peterson.

Peterson is from Seattle, Washington and is a Senior Fine Arts major, with a concentration in Printmaking and will graduate in the Fall of 2012.

Peterson’s work has been shown at GSW, The Macon Arts Alliance and The Social Club Gallery.

An internet-based art show that Georgia Southwestern State University senior fine arts major Kurt Peterson was involved with has just been purchased by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

The show is entitled "Learning To Love You More", and is curated by Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher. Peterson's entry is now part of their permanent collection. 

In 2002, July and Fletcher launched the collaborative online project that invited people all over the world to respond to creative assignments.

Participants followed the artists' simple instructions and submitted documentation, or "reports," on their interpretations of each activity to be posted on the website. Examples of assignments include: "Make an audio recording of a choir," "Make a protest sign and protest," and "Take a picture of your parents kissing."

Peterson submitted a report to "Assignment #50: Take a flash photo under your bed." The project concluded in 2009, but the website continues to exist online as an archive.

"As an artist creating work in a time that is widely considered post-postmodernism, I understand the need to be comfortable using unconventional or non-traditional approaches for having my work noticed, and that is why I jumped at the chance to be involved with this project," said Peterson. "I have immense respect for Miranda July, and growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I have been aware of her work for many years.

A native of Seattle, Washington, Kurt Peterson is a Senior Fine Arts major, with a concentration in Printmaking.

He will graduate in Fall 2012. His work has been shown at Georgia Southwestern, The Macon Arts Alliance and The Social Club Gallery in San Diego, Calif.  He lives in Americus.
