SGTC Horticulture advisory committee meets

South Georgia Technical College’s Horticulture advisory committee met recently on SGTC’s Americus campus in the Horticulture classroom.

Members of the advisory committee met with SGTC Horticulture instructor Mark Collier. The members reviewed all aspects of the program to keep the program abreast of trends and changes in the horticulture field.

The purpose of the advisory committee meetings is to provide expert support for the program the committee represents.

South Georgia Technical College Horticulture students visited two gardens in Athens on a recent field trip, accompanied by their instructor, Mark Collier.

The first garden, the University of Georgia Horticulture Trial Gardens, was part of a Green Industry open house hosted by world-renowned floriculturist Dr. Allan Armitage.

The gardens were started in 1982 and are open year-round. The primary functions of the garden are research, teaching, and new crop introduction.

South Georgia Technical College conducted the largest commencement ceremony in the history of the college on Thursday, June 21st at 6 p.m. in the James S. Peters Gymnasium on the Americus campus with a capacity crowd.

Over 500 students, 96 of which were either Presidential honor or regular honor graduates, received awards of either an associate degree or a diploma during the commencement ceremony held in June.

Thanks to a generous $65,000 grant from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) will help implement an innovative program promoting healthy lifestyles to residents of the South Pacific living with the disease.

Philip Szmedra, Ph.D., GSW professor of economics, leads a research group that submitted the grant proposal entitled "Using Community Theater to Promote Diabetes Education and Prevention in Fiji".

South Georgia Technical College will be hosting its 2012 graduation exercise Thursday, June, 21st at 6 p.m. in the James S. Peters Gymnasium on the Americus campus.

Kerry Beaver of Americus, South Georgia Technical College’s 2012 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) winner, is scheduled to be the guest speaker at the event.
