Big-money lottery games roll over for big jackpots

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Mega Millions has rolled over numerous times to create an estimated jackpot of $170 million for tonight's drawing. It is also drawn on Fridays.

Powerball, which is drawn on Wednesdays and Saturdays, has an estimated jackpot of about $350 million.

Alday Murders: 40 years later

DONALSONVILLE, GA (WALB)- Tuesday marks the anniversary of one of the worst crimes in the history of Georgia; the Alday family murders in Seminole County.

Six members of the Alday family were brutally murdered by a trio of prison escapees, on May 14, 1973.

Nine days after three inmates escaped from a Maryland prison they would end up at the home of Jerry Alday looking for money and guns. The men fatally shot Jerry, his father Ned, brothers Chester and Jimmy, and Uncle Aubrey. His wife, Mary was brutally raped and killed. Her body found two days later in a wooded area.

Andersonville events highlights Sumter Co. activities

AMERICUS, GA (WALB)- From the Chamber of Commerce-

Andersonville National Historic Site is pleased to announce the opening of its latest temporary exhibit, Return With Honor.

This exhibit commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the release of American POWs held during the Vietnam War. The repatriation process was known as Operation Homecoming and the exhibit chronicles the POW's return to freedom. The exhibit also celebrates the ingenuity and endurance of these extraordinary American heroes.

Southwest Georgia's drought is officially over

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- According to the National Drought Mitigation Center, the drought for Southwest Georgia is officially over. 

Due to recent heavy rain fall and cooler temperatures, the National Drought Mitigation Center has now said that Southwest Georgia is not in a drought condition of any sort.

We were previously classified from D0, abnormally dry, to D2, which means a severe drought.

Americus police chief quits

AMERICUS, GA (WALB)- Americus Police Chief Mark Gerbino resigned effective immediately this morning.

His resignation comes after the City Council voted unanimously to place him on a 10-day administrative leave after which he was going to be fired.

No reason has been given for wanting to dismiss the chief.

Majors Richard McCorkle and Herman Lamar has been appointed interim police chiefs in Americus.

Sumter inmate back in custody

AMERICUS, GA (WALB)- Sumter County authorities confirm the inmate that escaped from a work detail yesterday is now back in custody.

22-year-old Justin Ward was found this morning under a bridge on Highway 280.

Authorities used a helicopter to find the inmate who walked off a work detail near Bob Dodson Road around 12:30 Tuesday afternoon.

Sheriff Pete Smith says 22-year old Justin Ward from Carroll County was serving a burglary conviction at the Sumter County Correctional Institute.
