Oldest Negro League Baseball player to speak at Jimmy Carter Historic Site

PLAINS, GA – The oldest Negro League Baseball player, Roosevelt Jackson, 92 will speak at the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site Friday, July 22 at 7 p.m.

Jackson is from Gay, GA and played for several teams including the Miami Globetrotters, the Buffalo Red Sox, the Danny Dodgers, the Hollywood Redbirds, and the Fort Lauderdale Braves.

Jackson is in the Negro League Hall of Fame and is one of the few former players of the Negro League to have a U.S. Postage Stamp in his honor.

First Annual Martin Wise Benefit Softball Tournament

AMERICUS, GA – The First Annual Martin Wise Benefit Softball Tournament will be Saturday, June 18 at the Sumter County Regional Park-Highway 19 South at 9 a.m.

The entry fee which includes a barbecue lunch and dugout refreshments is $25 per person and $300 for a team.

All proceeds will go to the Martin Wise Benefit. For more information call 229-815-0604.

Former SGTC center joining Univ. of Alaska basetball team

AMERICUS, GA – A former South Georgia Technical College center will be joining the University of Alaska at Anchorage women's basketball team.

Miriam Seale signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of Alaska women’s basketball team.

"Miriam is a great addition to our team because she has the ability to be a fierce defender and rebounder," UAA coach Tim Moser said in a press release.
